I Like My Wife

This past weekend was our ninth anniversary. In the morning before Ann went on errands, I asked her if she could please pick me up something that I could give to her. She kind of laughed, but I was pretty serious. When she got back, she said, "Let's just not do anything," and it sounded good to me!

Most women are so much more high maintenance than my wife. I once had a fiancee break up with me because I blew off Valentine's Day. Of course, that was just the surface reason, but it was the trigger.

I find that I'm quite anti-romance. I believe that so much about relations between men and women is just cultural hoohah. On a related note, I also despise makeup and lingerie. So I'm glad I have a wife who isn't into any of these things. Oh, not that Ann would mind a LITTLE more romantic effort on my part, but she's not pining away or anything, as far as I know.

When the mail came on Saturday afternoon, there was an anniversary card from our life-insurance agent, who always calls and sends a card without fail on our birthdays and anniversary. So I crossed out the "Y" in "Congratulations on Your Anniversary" and crossed out his name inside and added my own sweet little message, and she got a kick out of it. However, she did say it would work only this one time, which is a shame because I was thinking I'd found my formula from here on out.

And it's not like we didn't spend any money on each other. We went out to our favorite restaurant, Bombay House, and we went to the dollar movies only because that's the only place where something was playing that remotely interested us (Amazing Grace, which was beautifully filmed and well acted but a little weak in some aspects of the storytelling). And we bought a new TV for our bedroom and started making some definite plans for a $5,000 trip to England for our tenth anniversary next year.

I have a very similar attitude towards romance. My husband is more interested in birthdays and anniversaries than I am, so I end up being the one struggling not to forget an important event. ;-)

By the way, I don't know if you saw it, but I posted some more comments about your novel here.

I'm sick to my stomach. I'm sure you can guess why. It was a nice post anyway, I think?
